I can only speak from personal experience, but if you’ve moved around the U.S. prior to the emergence of E-commerce, you’ll know where I’m coming from. Whatever happened to the days of local fashion? Is it still prevalent, or is it a thing of the past? Does Nyc still dress like Nyc, does Philly dress like Philly Etc… Or does everyone dress like Instagram? I’ll take it back to the early 2000’s, or even the late 90’s we would hit up Virginia beach for the 4th of July weekend. Dudes from Northern VA & DC had on shorts with Timbs, but it wasn’t how we wore them up North… Instead of maybe some ankle socks, or standard tube socks with constructs, or beef & broccoli’s… DC cats rocked their butters (as they call em) Construction Timbs… with thick white tube socks. The only way that I can describe them, is they look like the type of socks you see on women who practice Ballerina, but in white… I’m one of those people who when I go other places, tends to notice things like this. And it was one of the first things that stood out to me back then… As far as the rest of their fits back then, it seemed pretty standard to how we did it up north. When I say “Up North”, I’m referring to NJ & NYC… Coming up, I wasn’t one of those people who never left the neighborhood… At around 15, 16 years old… We started playing NYC pretty tough… It started with visits to see my pops who was from Newark NJ & from there as Five Percenters, we would visit Brooklyn (Fort Green Park) to Universal Parliaments for the summer & Harlem for the winter Rally’s… Every month from 93 to 99 and weeks in between, we would travel from Jersey to the city… This is how I was able to pick up on the culture and see some of the styles that existed outside of NJ… Fast forward to 2000 I moved to Baltimore MD with my older sister… The only way I can describe Baltimore back then was like a Southern Newark NJ… Long White Tees and Swamps/ aka field boots were what I saw mostly everywhere. Baltimore wasn’t anywhere near what I expected it to be. Coming up, Northerners made the south appear slow… Which I quickly learned, was mostly nonsense… Baltimore back then might’ve been a little slow when it came to Northern fashion, but they were fast with Hustling… Bmore was a Dope city, meaning the drug of choice down there was Heroin… And anyone who knows how that goes, knows they were getting (Plenty Money)… A lot of young KingPins came out of the DMV… Rayful Edmond, Anthony Jones & Billy Guy to name a few… They all got money down in that area. But back to the fashion. Baltimore back then wore a lot of Gap Denim & Sweats, Timbs & most dudes had dreads (locks), but not raggedy locks… Baltimore has some of the best black hair stylists in the country, dudes dreads were “On Point” back then… Later when I visited Atlanta for the first time, I could see a clear difference between the two… Atlanta back in 07 wasn’t how it is now… Back then everything was super baggy, the dreads were thick and most of the cars were old schools… Atlanta is a whole different world today! It really is the black Hollywood now… Atlanta was one of first to bring back the peasy/ (nappy) Fro… Other states picked up on it later, but they brought the look back… So I’m saying all that to say this… Through my travels you could tell the differences through style & fashion… Philly kept the vintage Guess jeans and chuckers going for a while… DC and parts of Maryland had the Nike Foam Posite game on lock and Jersey was the Vasque/ Goretex capital for a long time… Now everybody seems to dress like Instagram… When did this happen and will cities ever go back to local fashion? I kinda miss the days when styles were different, it made visiting other places worth while…
